Background

According to open source media reports, Houthi rebels seized parts of the Red Sea port of Hodeidah, Yemen. The insurgents are reported to have set up check points on routes into the port and airport.

Analysis and Assessment

The Houthis, whose stronghold is in Yemen's northern highlands, have imposed informal control of government ministries in Sanaa recently. Hodeidah port's operations are currently unaffected but this could change rapidly. Hodeidah is Yemen's second largest port and the country's largest oil refinery is located there.
